Bengali Musicians, Singers

The music of Bengal with varying chants, notes, lyrics, and styles capturing the ethos, logos, love, and pathos of the tender minds and hearts of Bengali people has always got something special to offer to the music lovers. The greatest musician of Bengal is of course none other than Rabindranath Tagore popularly known as Gurudev. The mystic and marvel of Tagore’s rich body of musical works known as Rabindrasangeet is second to none. All the reflections, emotions and appeals of humankind find an utterance in the impeccable lyrics, unsullied diction, and melodious rhythm of the music composed by Rabindranath.  Kazi Nazrul Islam, Dwijendralal Roy, Rajanikanta Sen, and Atulprasad created distinct subgenres of Bengali Music. Himangshu Dutta, Sachindev Burman, Rahul Dev Burman, Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay, and many others carried on the legacy of Bengali music with their colossal contribution to modern Bengali Music. Bengali music has also been enriched by a host of mellifluous singers including Jagonmoy, Hemanta, Manna, Sandhya, Shyamal, Pintu, Satinath, Utpala, Dhanonjoy, Arati, Manabendra, Debabrata, Sumitra, Suchitra, Konica, and many other artists of talents alike. They have mesmerized the music lovers with their majestic texture of voices and sublime renditions for years together. The rock band Moheener Ghoraguli followed by Bhumi, Chandrabindoo, Fossils, Cactus, and others have inculcated new styles of rock, folk, and fusion in Bengali music accompanied by the interplay of modern instruments including electric guitars, saxophone, drums, flute, violin, and bass violin. Kabir Suman introduced a new genre of alternative Bengali music in 1990s with the creation of matchless composition of exquisite songs representing the contemporary times and mundane lives of common people, lyrically. Anjan, Nachikata, Rupam, Anupam, and others followed his trend and kept the Bengali song lovers enthralled with relatively unconventional yet powerful composition of songs with offbeat lyrics. The popular modern Bengali singers including Srikanto, Indranil, Indrani, Shrabani, Lopamudra, Swagatalakshmi, Subhamita, Rupankar, Somlata, and Sreya Ghosal continue to enchant the music lovers with their melodious voice and pleasantly blissful rendition of soulful music.
